Following the success of the 2008 International Symposium on “The Wider Black Sea Area in Perspective”, the International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS) hosted the 2nd International Black Sea Symposium on “The Black Sea Region: the State of Play and the Way Forward”. The event was held on the island of Kalymnos, Dodecanese/Greece, from Tuesday, 30 June to Sunday, 5 July 2009.
In 2009, more than 120 persons applied to attend and 42 selected participants from 22 countries had the opportunity to learn, discuss and network at the 2009 IBSS. Prominent experts led sessions focusing inter alia on the role of key stakeholders, the protracted conflicts, energy security, or EU-Russian relations. Sessions alternated with workshops on structured dialogue guided by expert facilitator Prof. Benjamin Broome (Arizona State University) and team of four assistant facilitators. Replacing the previous year’s study groups with a programme of workshops was very well received by the vast majority of participants. Programme

The excellent feedback by both participants and speakers referring to all aspects of the event showed that the IBSS really fills a gap for young professionals with a Black Sea focus in terms of learning, dialogue and networking opportunities. It also encouraged the organisers to continue this project in 2010. For further information you can also send an email via our Contact Form or a fax to +30 210 324 2244. A dedicated website for the IBSS project is currently under development.
