6th International Black Sea Symposium 2013

6th International Black Sea Symposium 2013

4-6 July 2013

“Empowering Civil Society in the Black Sea region:

a Tool for Innovative Social Change”

The International Centre for Black Sea Studies (ICBSS) launched the International Black Sea Symposium project in 2008 in the context of a need for transnational cooperation in the wider Black Sea region. Now, amidst financial transformations and new global challenges, the need for increased cooperation and innovative actions becomes ever more evident.

In its sixth year, the Symposium builds on the success and positive impact of its previous five editions to bring together the next generation of stakeholders with an interest in the Black Sea area, introducing a new dimension, civil society, as a key element to economic growth, sustainable development and social change.

This year’s 6th IBSS aims at becoming a hub of actors in this space where innovative thinkers, researchers and NGOs from the Black Sea countries, that have successfully implemented innovative projects, can come together to create a streamlined, vigorous social innovation field in the Black Sea area.

The role of the non-profit sector remains critically important, but social innovation is seen today as a broader concept – one that cuts across the non-profit, for-profit, and public sectors and that addresses a wider and more complex range of societal issues.

New forms of collaboration, both within and across sectors, and new ways of working can be observed, reflecting new media and new technologies, greater knowledge about the innovation process itself, and new understanding about complex systems, about how people organize, and how ideas move. These new ways of working involve different types of partnerships (public/private, profit/non-profit, and public/profit/non-profit); the adoption of cross-sectoral strategies; and the development of new networks and means of networking.

In this regard, we invite students, institutions, researchers, entrepreneurs and policy makers, of different backgrounds and expertise, from around the world, to exchange views and enhance the dialogue on empowering civil society and bringing social change in the Black Sea.

The event’s working language was in English.
